Expanded clay pebbles (also called Hydroton or LECA) are the most popular grow media for aquaponics systems in Australia. The porous structure provides enormous surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonise — these bacteria are the engine of your nitrogen cycle. Clay pebbles are pH neutral, reusable indefinitely, drain freely to prevent waterlogging, and do not compact over time. A 50L bag fills approximately a 60x40cm grow bed to 30cm depth. Rinse thoroughly before use to remove clay dust.
